For students, September is a time of excitement, anticipation and renewing social ties. For staff at the University of Manitoba, September can be a time of anxiety, stress and coping as we deal with the sudden influx of thousands of eager but sometimes worried or frustrated students.
During this "September rush" we often find ourselves tense, stressed-out and irritable and we may spend longer hours at work, essentially removing ourselves from our social circle during this hectic time. We look forward to the end of the rush when we can relax and maybe even put our feet up, if only for a moment. Sometimes, however, this moment comes too late, or not at all, and the cycle of stress continues.
What if we didn't have to wait for that moment of relaxation? What if we could be proactive and do something for ourselves right now to alleviate that stress, or even prevent it altogether?
Bison Recreation Services at the University of Manitoba offers programs designed to do just that. An entire section of programming is devoted to "Mind, Body & Spirit." Very knowledgeable and qualified instructors lead you through programs such as Pilates, Power Yoga, Slow Flow Yoga and Tai Chi. Each of these is designed to manage stress in some form or another, whether through breathing techniques, physical postures, movements or pure relaxation. Early evening, later evening and even lunch hour programs are available to fit a wide variety of schedules. Programs run on both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses.
Do yourself a favour and make September a month to look forward to! Let Bison Recreation Services help your Mind, Body & Spirit.Registration has already begun for these programs. For more information, please visit our website at http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/kinrec/bsal/programs/ or dial 474-6100.
