Bison women's soccer announce team captains for 2011 season

Bison Sports logoThe Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team begins their seventh season in the Canada West conference with familiar faces as team captains. They are pleased to announce two team captains for the upcoming 2011 season.

The players and coaches selected Bison fourth year midfielder Meagan Smith and fourth year defender Julie Lafreniere as team captains for this season. This captain honour occurs for the second consecutive season for both players at Manitoba.
 
Bison women’s soccer head coach Chris Lewis commented, “Both players have excelled on and off the field as they provide continued leadership, energy and are CIS Academic All-Canadians. Meagan is the team most reliable and versatile player while Julie is a very strong defender who is quick and aggressive.”
 
Smith, 22, enters her fifth and final year with the Bisons in 2011. In 2010, she played in 13 of 14 regular season games and was tied for fifth in team scoring with one goal. She also added seven shots on goal, third highest on the team. The Clanwilliam, MB native is a three-time CIS Academic All-Canadian.
 
Lafreniere, 21, starts her fourth season at Manitoba in 2011. She has been a solid defender at the back for the Bisons over the years. In 2010, she started and played in all 14 regular season games and added one assist with three shots on goal. Overall in three seasons, she has played in 43 of 45 regular season and playoff games (started 41 games) and had two assists with 15 shots on goal. The Winnipeg native is a two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian.
 
 
Bison women’s soccer notes: The Herd completed training camp and opens the 2011 Canada West regular season at home with two games. Manitoba hosts the 2010 CIS bronze medalist and reigning Canada West champion Fraser Valley Cascades on Saturday, September 10 at a 12 p.m. (noon) and then host the Victoria Vikes on Sunday, September 11 at 12 p.m. (noon). All home games during the 2011 campaign for Bison women’s soccer will be held at the new University of Manitoba Turf West Field. Admission is free.
