No. 4 ranked Bison men’s hockey team seek to clinch Canada West first place

The No. 4 ranked Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team holds a 18-5-3 conference record after 26 games and in first place in Canada West standings with 39 points. They are one point ahead of Alberta and two points ahead of Saskatchewan with one weekend series remaining in the 2011-12 conference regular season.

The Bisons seek to clinch a Canada West first place in conference regular season standings since the 1970-71 season. Manitoba hosts the fifth place UBC Thunderbirds (12-11-3) on February 17-18 weekend at the Max Bell Arena. Puck drop is 7 p.m. CT on both nights. This is the third meeting between the two teams this season.

Earlier in the 2011-12 season, Manitoba had a home sweep of UBC with 5-3 win on Feb. 4 and 3-2 (SO) victory on Feb. 3 at the Max Bell Arena. The Bisons also split a road weekend series at UBC with 2-1 loss on Nov. 18/11 and 4-2 win on Nov. 19/11. So far this season, the Herd holds a sterling 10-2-0 record at home while UBC is 4-6-2 on the road.

In Canada West scoring, forward Blair Macaulay (22 goals, nine assists) leads the team and fourth in conference scoring with 31 points in 26 conference games. Defenceman Jeremy Schappert is second on the team and tied for 12th overall with 21 points (4g, 17a) plus first among all Canada West defenceman scoring. Also in Top 15 conference scoring, Tyler Dittmer (6g, 15a) is tied for 12th with 21 points and Ian Duval (9g, 11a) is tied for 14th at 20 points.

In the nets, Joe Caligiuri is fifth with 2.46 GAA, fourth with ten wins and tied for first in conference shutouts with three. This is the last regular season games for Bison fifth year players Mike Hellyer, Travis Mealy, Jared Walker and Chris Benias.
