Bison mens hockey team announces team captains for 2009-10 season

The Manitoba Bison men’s hockey team prepare to play in the 74th Canada West season, they are pleased to announce the team captains for the upcoming 2009-10 season. Forward Calin Wild is named team captain for the first time with the Bisons and the alternate captains will be forwards Mike Hellyer, Rick Wood and defenceman Kip Workman.
Bison men’s hockey head coach Mike Sirant, entering his 14th season at the helm of Manitoba, commented, “I am please to announce Calin as the team captain this upcoming season and have Mike, Rick and Kip as the alternate captains. All four players are veterans who have demonstrated leadership on and off the ice and will be great ambassadors of the Bison Hockey program.”
Wild, 22, was an alternate captain last season for the first time with Manitoba. The fourth year forward notched six goals and six assists for 12 points a +4 plus/minus rating in 22 regular season conference games during the 2008-09 season. Last season, Wild was seventh in team scoring and added two game-winning goals along with ten penalty minutes. Over the last three seasons, Wild has played in 75 of 84 conference games. The Extended Education student-athlete has been a three-time recipient (2006-07, 07-08, 08-09) of the Mike Ridley Award for superior athletic ability, good academic standing and high level of leadership as a full-time student.
Hellyer, 23, wears the ‘A’ for the first time for Manitoba and enters his third season with the Bisons after completing a great sophomore campaign. In the 2008-09 season, Hellyer was second on the team and tied for 17th in Canada West with 20 points (6g, 14a) in 28 regular season conference games plus earned a silver medalist while playing for Team Canada at the 2009 Winter Universiade (World University Games). Wood, 24, is in his fifth season with Manitoba and second time with the ‘A’. In the 2008-09 season, Wood was first on the team and tied for 13th in Canada West with 23 points (12g, 11a) in 28 regular season conference games plus earned a silver medalist while playing for Team Canada at the 2009 Winter Universiade. Workman, 25, is a captain for the third consecutive season as he had one assist in 13 regular season conference games in the 2008-09 season at the defenceman position.
Bison men’s hockey notes: Manitoba starts the 2009-10 Canada West season at home when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m. at the Max Bell Arena. Tickets are available at the door.
