Bison Sports logoFrom the Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team, second year goaltender Joe Caligiuri was selected as the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 2, 2011.

Caligiuri (pronounced Cal-a-jury) is the first Manitoba Bisons male student-athlete to earn this CIS weekly honour during the 2011-12 season.

Caligiuri, 22, was unbeatable during the first weekend of the men’s hockey regular season as he turned aside all 46 shots he faced to lead the Bisons to a pair of 2-0 road wins over the Calgary Dinos, who last year reached the CIS University Cup national tournament.
The 5-foot-10 netminder made 25 saves on Friday night and 21 more on Saturday as Manitoba completely shut down the Dinos’ power play, which went 0-for-11 during the two-game series. It marked the first time since 2007 that the Bisons kicked off conference play with a weekend sweep away from home.

Soccer players Ian Greedy of Cape Breton, Louis-Charles Laliberté of Laval and Robbie Murphy of Guelph were the other male nominees for this week’s CIS honour.

In addition, Caligiuri also earned Canada West and Smitty’s Bison Sports Male Athlete of the Week honour.

Manitoba (2-0-0) has a conference bye on Oct. 7-8 weekend and then heads back to Alberta on Oct. 14-15 weekend when they face the pre-season number one conference team in the Golden Bears in Edmonton for a two-game set.
