| The Manitoba Bison men’s hockey team prepares to start the 76th Canada West season, they are pleased to announce the team captains for the upcoming 2011-12 season. Forward Mike Hellyer is named team captain for the second time with the Bisons and the alternate captains will be defenceman Dane Crowley and forwards Chris Benias and Tyler Dittmer. Bison men’s hockey head coach Mike Sirant, entering his 16th season at Manitoba, stated, “All four of these veteran players reflect the values of integrity, hard work, respect and honesty that is the foundation of Bison Hockey. They are intelligent people who provide tremendous insight to teammates and lead by example with competitiveness on-ice and are excellent ambassadors for U of Manitoba with service to the community.” Hellyer, 24, wears the ‘C’ for the second consecutive season for Manitoba. The fifth year forward scored seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points, good for sixth in team scoring and tied for 28th in Canada West while playing in 26 of 28 regular season conference games during the 2010-11 season. Over the last four seasons, the Brandon, MB native has potted 82 points (32g, 50a) while playing in 110 of 112 conference regular season games. In the 2008-09 season, he was part of the silver medallist Team Canada squad at the 2009 Winter Universiade (World University Games). Crowley, 24, is an alternate captain for the second consecutive season after playing his first season with Manitoba last season. In 2010-11 season, he was named a 2010-11 Canada West Second Team All-Star as he was second on the team and tied for ninth in Canada West in defencemen scoring with 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) in all 28 conference regular season games plus added one power play goal with 70 penalty minutes. Benias, 25, starts his fifth season with Manitoba and first time with the ‘A’. Benias had five points (1g, 4a) in 22 regular season conference during the 2010-11 season and he scored nine assists in 27 conference regular season games in 2009-10. Dittmer, 24, is in his fourth season with Manitoba and first time with the ‘A’. In the 2010-11 season, Dittmer had his CIS career season best with 20 points (9g, 11a) while playing in 26 of 28 regular season conference and two playoff games. He recorded 14 points (8g, 6a) in 24 games in 2009-10. Bison hockey notes: The Bison men’s hockey team opens the season on the road as they travel to play the Calgary Dinos at Father David Bauer Arena on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1.
