EDMONTON - The Canada West Universities Athletic Association and Western Hockey League proudly announce University of Manitoba right-winger and former Tri-City American Blair Macaulay (Asper School of Business) as Canada West men’s hockey Husky-WHL Graduate of the Month for November / December 2011.
Each monthly winner throughout the season receives a $500 cheque towards the cost of education, a plaque, a letter from WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and a computer bag.
Macaulay, in his third season at Manitoba, picked up a conference-best nine goals, adding three assists for 12 points in 10 games while leading the Bisons to a 6-3-1 record. U of M was 6-1-0 when Macaulay registered a point. He scored two game-winning goals, was named First Star twice and, on November 19 at UBC, recorded the second three-goal game of his Canada West career. The Business major also scored thrice during a March 2010 playoff game. The Bisons are now 10-4-2 on the season for 22 points, in third place and just two points out of first.
For Macaulay, this marks his second Husky-WHL monthly award this calendar year, as he was also the January 2011 winner.
The 23-year-old winger becomes the 11th monthly winner for the Bisons since the award’s inception in October 1989, also joining Paul Deniset and Karry Biette on the list of Bisons student-athletes to earn multiple selections.
Macaulay now sits tied with October’s Husky-WHL Graduate winner Kyle Bortis of the Saskatchewan Huskies with a league-leading 13 goals, while Macaulay’s 18 points leave him tied for fifth in Canada West scoring. In 68 career Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) regular season games Macaulay has racked up in 68 points (34G, 34A) over 72 games. He finished tied for third in league scoring during 2010-11 and was named a Canada West All-Star.
Macaulay was one of 155 Canada West student-athletes to receive a WHL scholarship for the 2011-12 and the University of Manitoba had total 27 recipients.
Before joining the Bisons, Macaulay had three full seasons in the WHL - two with the Saskatoon Blades (2005-07) and one with the Tri City Americans (2007-08). In 212 career WHL games, the 5-11 Winnipeg native had 27 goals and 40 helpers for 67 points. In 26 playoff games Macaulay registered 2-4-6, going to the seventh game of the Western Conference final in 2008 with Tri-City.
Former WHL teammates include Minnesota Wild forward Devin Setoguchi, Boston Bruins goaltending prospect Anton Khudobin, Washington Capitals netminding prospect Braden Holtby, 2010 Canada West MVP Chad Klassen, now a member of the East Coast Hockey League’s Idaho Steelheads, and runner-up in this month’s award voting, Saskatchewan Huskies forward Derek Hulak.
Other nominees for the November/December 2011 Husky-WHL honour were Hulak, Dustin Moore (Lethbridge), Scott Wasden (UBC), Partik Bungal (Regina) and Real Cyr (Alberta)
