The No. 4 ranked Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team clinches Canada West first place in conference regular season standings for the first time since the 1970-71 season. The Bisons won 5-4 (OT) over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, February 18 at the Max Bell Arena to secure the first spot in the conference in over 40 years.

Manitoba finishes 2011-12 conference regular season with a 20-5-3 record for 43 points. The Herd stayed ahead of Alberta and Saskatchewan in a tight battle for first place that went down to the last game of the regular season.

With clinching first place, the Bisons now earn a playoff bye as they will await the winners of the two 2012 Canada West Quarter Final series on Feb. 24-26 weekend. In addition, Manitoba will have home ice advantage for the remainder of the 2012 playoffs as the best-of-three series are all played at the home of the highest seed.

Bison men’s hockey head coach Mike Sirant, in his 16th season at the helm, stated after the historic win, “We never brought it (clinching first) in the dressing room but the guys were aware of what was at stake tonight. I am proud of what we have accomplished so far and share it with Alumni who have played in Canada West. We will soak this in for a couple of days and then start focus on Canada West Semi-Final.”

This season, the Herd holds a sterling 12-2-0 record at home and have won six consecutive home games since the start of the second half of the season.
