Bison Jeremy Botelho selected Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week
Posted Tuesday, September 15, 2009 9:38 AM
From the second week of the football season, fourth year kick returner/receiver Jeremy Botelho was selected as Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 13.

Bisons kick returner/receiver set a new Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) record when he returned a missed field goal 129 yards for a touchdown during the 41-7 road loss to #10 Simon Fraser on Friday, September 11. Under the current CIS rule, this is the longest possible return of a missed field goal and Botelho notched his first ever touchdown in his CIS career.

After a unsuccessful 30 yard field goal attempt by SFU’s Jason Cook, Botelho faked to go down on one knee in the back of the end zone and then proceeded to run the ball through a maze of players and streaked down the middle of the field for the record-breaking return play. The score gave the Bisons some momentum at the time and instead of 29-0, the Bisons only were down 26-7 at the end of the second quarter,

The Bison rookie produced 146 yards in return yards (punt and missed field goals) plus one kickoff return for 15 yards and added one reception for 15 yards in the loss.

Botelho is second in Canada West punt return average at 12.7 and tied for eighth in conference all purpose yards with 226.

This is the first Bison to be named to conference football honours during the 2009 campaign.

Bison Football Notes: Next action for Bison Football (0-2) is at home for their first home match of the 2009 season on Saturday, September 19 vs. UBC Thunderbirds (1-1) at University Stadium starting at 2 p.m. for the Homecoming Game. The game can be heard live on Campus Radio UMFM 101.5 FM starting at 1:30 p.m. and available live on SHAW TV as the Canada West Game of the Week.
