The Manitoba Bison football team is pleased to announce the team captains for the upcoming 2008 season. There are three from the offense, three from the defense side and one on special teams.

Fifth year quarterback John Makie will be a third time captain. In his second full CIS season with the Bisons in 2007, Makie went 150-238 for 2022 yards (eighth in CIS) and nine TDs. He led the team to a Vanier Cup after a 12-0 regular season and playoff record, twice selected CIS Offensive Player of the Week and named Vanier Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

Third year running back Matt Henry earns his captaincy for the first time. Last season, he had 616 yards on 104 carries with eight rushing TDs (sixth in CIS) while he split time with Karim Lowen. Henry was a 2007 Canada West All-Star and is coming off a Vanier Cup victory where he played before suffering a horrific injury but made a remarkable recovery in the off-season to be in the lineup for starting day in 2008.

Fourth year receiver Simon Blaszczak will be a captain for the first time. In 2007, he had 18 catches for 233 yards with three touchdowns in only four regular season games plus 15 receptions for 168 yards and 1 TD in four playoff games.

Fifth year linebacker Kenton Onofrychuk becomes captain for the second time. Last season, he accumulated 35 tackles, two interceptions and one breakup in regular season. He added 19.5 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble and breakup in 2007 playoffs.

Fourth year Jim Jeavons plays at the linebacker position and is a first time captain. He registered second most tackles on team with 39 (three for losses), three breakups and two sacks in 2007 regular season. In 2007 playoffs, Jeavons had 16 tackles and his highlight was a 99 yard interception TD in Mitchell Bowl.

Fourth year defensive lineman Don Oramasionwu is a new captain this season. In 2007, he registered 23 tackles (three for losses) and two sacks in regular season with seven tackles (one for loss), one fumble recovery and one sack in 2007 playoffs

Fourth year fullback Will Sheils becomes captain at special teams for the first time. Last season, he accumulated three tackles in 2007 regular season plus added seven tackles in 2007 playoffs.
Bison football head coach Brian Dobie stated, “These captains represent all 85 players on the team this season. They are all highly respected by teammates and coaches and have shown the strength and integrity of a champion by understanding the responsibility of being a captain on and off the field.”
