Bison running back Anthony Coombs to be included in Faces in the Crowd section of Sports Illustrated
Posted Saturday, February 25, 2012 1:00 PM

Manitoba Bisons rookie running back Anthony Coombs accomplishments are now being seen and read in North America’s leading sports publication.

Coombs becomes the first University of Manitoba student-athlete to be included in the 56 year history of Faces in the Crowd section of Sports Illustrated in the Feb. 27 issue.

“This is crazy and unreal,” commented Coombs about making Sports Illustrated. “To be in such a prestigious magazine where other great athletes have been profiled in the past in Faces in The Crowd is pretty cool and I am still trying to process this. I am honoured and can’t wait to pick up a copy!”

Coombs headshot and write-up in the Faces in the Crowd (a section in Sports Illustrated that honors talented amateur athletes and their accomplishments) highlights his recent MVP performance at the International Bowl.

The 19 year old accumulated a game-high 147 rushing yards on 14 carries and also scored two touchdowns as the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Team defeated the U.S. Under-19 National Team by a 35-29 score in USA Football’s third annual International Bowl on February 1 in Austin, TX.
The Winnipeg native scored two rushing touchdowns (first was 19 yards) with the longest on a 62 yard TD run to push the World lead to 35-16 at the start of the fourth quarter before a late rally by Team USA.

The game marked Team USA’s first loss in international competition at the senior or junior level, including the 2007 and 2011 IFAF Senior World championships, the 2009 U-19 IFAF World Championship and two previous International Bowls. The IFAF World roster featured players from nine IFAF member federations - American Samoa, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Japan, Mexico, Spain and Sweden.

Faces in the Crowd has been published every week in Sports Illustrated since 1956. The Feb. 27 issue first arrived in subscribers’ mailboxes and hits newsstands on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
