Posted Monday, October 17, 2011 3:18 PM

Bison Sports logoIn the sixth weekend of the Canada West football regular season, running back Anthony Coombs was selected as Canada West Offence Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 16/11. This is second time to receive weekly honour.

Coombs was a one man scoring machine as he rattled off four rushing touchdowns, tied for fourth most in a single game in conference history, and accumulated 226 rushing yards on 20 carries for an impressive 11.3 average during a 48-20 home win versus Alberta on Saturday, October 15.

The rookie running back, in only his fifth CIS career game, started his pursuit of a 200 yard running game with an amazing, highlight reel run as he weaved his way through the Bears’ defence and found the end zone after a scintillating 69 yard TD run at the five minute mark of the first quarter.

Coombs then added a one yard TD plunge later in the quarter. Before the half, the Bisons drove again on the feet of Coombs as he rushed for 28 yards before finishing the drive on a five yard TD run and his third TD of the game. Coombs had an amazing 180 yards and three TDs at half and the Bisons began to rest starters in the second half but not before he added a fourth rush TD from 12 yards.

The 226 rushing yards is the most so far in a single game during the 2011 Canada West season. He almost had a fifth TD but was ruled down at the goal line and QB Khaleal Williams dived in from one yard on the next play in the second quarter. In addition, the Winnipeg native had two receptions for 13 yards in the 28 point victory.

Coombs is first in Canada West all-purpose yards with 996 yards plus third in Canada West with 472 rushing yards and tied for fourth with five touchdowns.

Manitoba (3-3) now travels to play in Calgary against the #2 Calgary Dinos (6-0) on Saturday, October 22 at 1 p.m. local time.

This is the fifth Manitoba Bisons player to be named to conference football honours during the 2011 campaign (week one: Anthony Coombs – Offence; week three: Thomas Hall – Defence and Grayson Wells – Special Teams; week five: Nic Demski – Special Teams).
