Bisons Hall and Wells selected Canada West Defence and Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week
Posted Monday, September 19, 2011 2:25 PM

Bison Sports logoIn the third weekend of the Canada West football regular season, fourth year linebacker Thomas Hall was selected as Canada West Defence Football Athlete of the Week while fifth year defensive back Grayson Wells was selected as Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 18/11.

Thomas Hall was a force throughout as he was top team tackler and made a couple sacks during the Bisons upset 26-16 home win over the #4 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, September 17.

Hall led the team with 6.5 total tackles (four solo) along with two sacks for 11 yard loss while playing at the linebacker position. Hall was responsible for disrupting the rhythm of Huskies starting QB Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren and being a part of a Bison defensive unit that shut down a potent Saskatchewan offence and only allow them to gain 283 total offence yards.

Grayson Wells made the play of the game against Saskatchewan as he jumped on a loose ball in the end zone at the start of the fourth quarter for the first lead of the game that Manitoba would not relinquish during the upset win.

It is not often a punt coverage is a difference maker in a football game but the host team took full advantage of the howling 35 km/h wind. On the first play at the start of the fourth quarter, Bison punter Brendon Bowman boomed a 64 yard punt, with the wind, that went off Huskies’ Jerit Lambert hands and dribbled into the end zone. Manitoba’s DB Wells hustled downfield and jumped on the loose, live ball in the Huskies end zone for a surprising touchdown. Manitoba then led 19-16 and held on for the rest of the game.

Manitoba (2-1) now travel to face the UBC Thunderbirds (2-1), for their second road game of the 2011 season, on Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m. PT.

This is now the third Manitoba Bisons player to be named to conference football honours during the 2011 campaign (week one: Anthony Coombs – Offence).
