Students must register in 9 credit hours as follows:
ICEL 1210 A60 Conversational Icelandic
(3 credit hours)
ICEL 1400 A60 Introduction to Contemporary Culture in Iceland
(3 credit hours)
ICEL 1410 A60 Introduction to Culture in Medieval Iceland
(3 credit hours)
The field school examines three areas - contemporary culture, medieval culture, and conversational Icelandic (no prior knowledge of Icelandic is required). Students will travel throughout the country, including the capital city of Reykjavík, Akureyri, the east fjords, and the west fjord region. The program includes visits to major museums and sites, and special cultural presentations.
Students must attend a full day pre-trip session on June 22 to receive academic credit.
The Department of Icelandic Language and Literature may have scholarships of up to $500 for eligible students participating in the Icelandic Field School in Summer Session 2012. Travel Fee is $2,895.00 CAD (subject to change), and includes accommodation in guesthouses and university dormitories, some breakfasts, local transportation, most entrance fees, and cultural presentations. Airfare, food, personal expenses, visa fee, health and trip cancellation insurance, as well as University of Manitoba tuition are not included. Students traveling with the group or on their own are responsible for arranging return travel and must be in Reykjavik in accordance with the published course dates.
Travel fees may be paid by cheque (payable to The University of Manitoba), VISA, MasterCard, or in cash.
A deposit of $1,000.00 CAD is due March 30, 2012 (includes $200.00 non-refundable deposit).
A second payment of $1,895.00 CAD is due May 25, 2012 ($2,895.00 if previous payment not made).
All students must have approval of the instructor.
In order to participate in a travel/study course, all students must sign an Acknowledgement of Responsibility and Liability Waiver that outlines risk and shared responsibility associated with travel/study.
