The Faculties of Education and Social Work, in conjunction with Solidarity In Action (solidarityinaction.ca), are planning a three week Service Learning course to Peru in June 2012. Students will volunteer in developing communities, such as San Genero and San Juan de Miraflores near Lima, and participate in activities such as: construction projects, teaching English to children, working with children with exceptionalities, and health campaigns.
During the three weeks, participants will have the opportunity to experience the rich culture and history of Peru through Spanish lessons, community dinners, and visits to historically significant sites such as Machu Picchu and Cusco. Daily group discussions and debriefing about social issues, educational topics, and personal reflection will help participants learn more about themselves.
Students in the Faculty of Education working towards their Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.), Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (PBDE), or Master’s degree can earn 3 credits at the University of Manitoba.
The travel fee is $3,300.00 CAD (subject to change), which includes double-occupancy accommodation in retreat houses, most meals, airfare from Toronto to Peru, local transportation, cultural visits, health insurance, and related travel/study costs. Passport, course materials, some meals, personal expenses, immunizations, as well as University of Manitoba tuition are not included. A portion of the fee is eligible for a tax receipt of $1,000.00 CAD from Solidarity in Action.
Students are responsible for arranging return travel from Winnipeg (or elsewhere if applicable) to Toronto in accordance with the departure dates (to be announced).
Travel fees may be paid by cheque or in cash.
A deposit of $500.00 CAD is due March 23, 2012 (includes $250 non-refundable deposit), and is payable to The University of Manitoba.
A second payment of $1,800.00 CAD is due April 10, 2012 ($2,300 if previous payment not made), and is payable to The University of Manitoba.
The third and final payment of $1,000.00 CAD is due May 1, 2012, and is payable to Solidarity in Action (submitted to the University of Manitoba).
All students must have approval of the instructor.
In order to participate in a travel/study course, all students must sign an Acknowledgment of Responsibility and Liability Waiver that outlines risk and shared responsibility associated with travel/study.
Students are required to attend pre-departure sessions. The dates will be announced later.
Students are advised that a passport is required. Canadian citizens do not require a tourist visa to enter Peru, but non-Canadians may require visas (advance notice of status to instructor is required).
