New University students can get a head start with Summer University Advantage

Are you a newly admitted University Student? If so, Summer Session offers you the opportunity to get a head start on your academic career! Through Summer University Advantage new students can begin their studies during the Summer Session. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of special activities that will assist them in making a successful and satisfying transition to the U of M. After all, university is a whole new world, and the most successful students are those best prepared to adapt to their new environment and its new and exciting challenges.

In 2012, Summer University Advantage will feature the very popular course “Introduction to University.” This class is a great introduction to the university culture, and to your forthcoming studies and life at the University of Manitoba. It also counts for 3 credits towards your degree while meeting the Written English requirement that is compulsory for U of M students. Some of the advantages of taking “Introduction to University” during the summer months include smaller class sizes and a more relaxed campus environment, which makes getting to know your professor,  your fellow students, and your new campus easier and more enjoyable. The smaller class sizes also ensure you get the individual attention that you need at the start of your university career.

Summer University Advantage gives students the opportunity to engage with faculty members and to receive individualized attention from support staff and advisors during the less hectic summer months.  Students will have the opportunity to meet with select faculty members who will acquaint them with various areas of study and research, and they will also participate in academic skill-building workshops designed to improve core university skills in essay writing, note taking, exam preparation, critical thinking, and time management.  Participants will further benefit from campus tours and introductions to the University’s resources such as libraries, research facilities, computing facilities, and a range of support services available on campus.

Summer University Advantage gives savvy students an invaluable advantage as they embark on their academic career at the U of M. The experience begins with an orientation session on July 3rd, which introduces students to the University of Manitoba, and the “Introduction to University” course will run from July 3rd through August 3rd, Monday through Thursday, from 10:00 until noon.

Students who have been admitted to the University by June 30th are eligible to participate in Summer University Advantage. Apply early, because enrolment is limited! Application forms for Summer University Advantage are available for downloading on the Summer Session Website at umanitoba.ca/summer.
