Denis Hlynka & Orest Cap receiving award

In September 2011, Drs. Orest Cap and Denis Hlynka of the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba were awarded the Dr. Michael and Muriel Ewanchuk Award. This award is given annually at the University of Manitoba, St. Andrew’s College convocation for significant projects, or for students and academics exploring some dimension of Ukrainian Canadian history.

The award was presented to Dr’s Cap and Hlynka for their unique University of Manitoba course titled Social Justice: Teaching the Ukrainian Canadian Internment. This course was one half of a six-credit summer institute that dealt with the Ukrainian Holodomor, through a Canadian lens. This graduate-level university credit course is a first-of-its-kind in Canada and focused on themes of social justice, pedagogy, and technology. It was offered to 15 students from diverse communities including, Manitoba, Nigeria, Pakistan, and the United States. Two of the students were University of Manitoba PhD candidates.

In addition, the course featured ten content experts from across Canada who presented on skype, through teleconferencing, or in person. Notably, one of the content experts was Member of Parliament, Mr. James Bezan. Bezan has received multiple awards for his contributions to Ukraine including two of Ukraines highest awards for historic contribution to the recognition of the Soviet-imposed Holodomor forced famine of 1932-1933 as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.
