Stadium send-off
Posted Thursday, November 3, 2011 10:45 AM
It has been a sports venue since 1967 and a prominent feature of the University of Manitoba.

On October 29, the last football kick-off takes place at University Stadium before the Manitoba Bisons move next door to Winnipeg’s new stadium. The new venue is slated to be completed in time for the 2012 CIS Football Season.

University Stadium was built specifically for the Pan American Games in 1967. Since then, it has played host to high school track and field meets and many seasons of Bison football.

Current football head coach Brian Dobie has spent many years in University Stadium. One of his first experiences was as a spectator in 1969.

“I remember watching one of the Bisons run almost the entire length of the field to get a touchdown,” said Dobie. “The funny part was the rabbit that was coincidently running down the track beside him at the same time!”

Dobie says it wasn’t just the football game that made it a memorable experience at University Stadium. It was the crowd that packed the stands and showed so much pride for the venue and the team.

“For the players and coaches that have experienced participating in a game at University Stadium, the venue represents pride. We are proud of the stadium and all of the memories we’ve made there. Though we’re saying bye on October 29, the memories will stay strong and we’re thankful for them,” said Dobie.

Winnipeg’s new stadium continues to rise next door to University Stadium. Even though they’re leaving their current field, Dobie says the team is looking forward to it.

“There’s no question about it, we’re excited beyond words to move into the new stadium,” Dobie said. “To move our team into a world-class stadium will be an amazing experience.” The Bisons will kick off for their final regular season game at University Stadium on October 29 at 1:00 p.m. against Regina.
