Portage and Main, corner of the jazz world (plus CD reviews)

In jazz, the brain drain most often flows in the direction of New York. Other cities, of course, are jazz hubs, be they Toronto, Boston, Berlin, London or Vancouver. But most typically, talents converge in New York and its bedroom boroughs. That's why Canadians Seamus Blake and Ingrid Jensen live there, why French musicians Jean-Michel Pilc and Jerome Sabbagh are there, why Brits Orlando Le Fleming and Will Vinson are there, and so on and so on.

So why have two New York heavies picked up and moved to Winnipeg?

That's right. Saxophonist Jimmy Greene and pianist George Colligan now live in the Peg, having been hired as assistant professors in the University of Manitoba's jazz studies faculty. That program is under the direction of U.S. ex-pat bassist Steve Kirby, who knows Greene and Colligan from his New York City days and has performed with both of them. More details are in this Winnipeg Free Press story. (see WFP edition of September 14, 2009)
