Convocation 2012 filled with Music

New graduates (L-R): Jessica Bergen, Michael Dueck & Karlissa Martens
This year’s convocation saw 52 undergraduates and graduates from the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music celebrate their degrees and accomplishments!

And while students prepared to enjoy the presentation of their degrees, the entire audience was treated to a variety of music from students and alumni alike.

Pre-ceremony music was provided by the Kaleb Kirby Quartet (Will Bonness – incoming jazz piano professor; Kaleb Kirby, current student; Luke Sellick, graduating student; and colleague Andrew Littleford). Lottie Enns-Braun (B.Mus.Hist. -U of M) was the organist; and the national anthem was performed by Caroline Markos and Justin Odwak, both currently students.

Faculty representative Mel Braun (Associate Professor and Vocal Area Coordinator) presented all candidates for degrees, diplomas and certificates to the Chancellor.

Special congratulations also go to Gold Medal Winner Dana Thacher.

While Convocation was certainly an exciting moment for all of our students, it is also just the first step in what we are sure will be exciting lifelong careers. Some graduates plan to continue their studies, either locally, nationally or abroad.

The prestigious Julliard School in New York has accepted jazz student Luke Sellick, (B.Jazz), while Jari Piper (B.Mus.Perf.) heads to McGill University in Montreal.

Alva Espino (B.Mus.) continues her studies next year at CMU, where she plans to complete a degree in music therapy, and Melita Mudri-Zubacz plans to stay here at the U of M to begin her Master of Music degree.

Many other graduates are making plans to either pursue further education, or a music-related career. In many cases, these young adults are simply continuing a career that began while they were still studying.

Amber Epp (B.Mus.Perf) has just received her Post-Baccalaureate diploma in Jazz Piano. As a jazz vocalist, she has already been performing for a number of years with various groups, including Trio Bembe – winner of a Western Canada Music Award in 2011 for Best New World Recording.

Whatever path these graduate take, it seems certain that they begin this next journey with enthusiasm for their vocation and a solid education. The Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music wishes them all the best!
