| McLellan Competition Winners at the Faculty of Music | | Posted Tuesday, April 24, 2012 12:00 PM |
| | On Friday April 20, 2012, the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg presented the 2012 WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
This competition, which provides funds to advanced young Manitoba musicians who are pursuing performance careers, often features students or graduates of the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. This year, we were honoured to see our graduates as 2 of the 3 finalists, and another as a featured guest!
Madeline Hildebrand (B.Mus. 2008, Post-Bacc Diploma 2010) presented Piano Concerto No. 1 by Prokofiev, and Jessica Strong (B.Mus. 2008, Post-Bacc Diploma 2009), soprano, presented arias by Verdi, Mozart, Massenet, and Puccini.
Sadly, the third finalist – Jennifer Sproule, mezzo-soprano – was forced to withdraw only a few days before the competition, due to illness. However, another Faculty grad, Sarah Kirsch (M.Mus. Performance ’12) stepped in as a featured soloist, accompanied by Chris Kayler (B.Mus. 2008, M.Mus. 2011).
“Pulling off as much music as Sarah and Chris did - delivered most fantastically - was huge,” says Dr. Judy Kehler Siebert, Associate Professor of Piano for the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music.
At the end of the evening, both Madeline and Jessica ended up sharing the $16,000 first prize. The $4,000 second prize was shared between Jennifer and Sarah.
The Faculty is – as always – extremely proud of our graduates and what they are accomplishing so early in their careers.
