Women's basketball student-athlete, Mubo Ilelaboye (Human Ecology) and men's hockey student-athlete, Brendan Rowinski (University 1) have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 13/11.
The Bison women’s basketball team split a road weekend series in the West Coast and earned their first conference win of the 2011-12 season. Fifth year forward Mubo Ilelaboye was a major reason for the strong results during the November 11-12 weekend.
Ilelaboye scored 41 points on 13/29 (45%) field goal shooting plus 14/16 (88%) free throw shooting along with nine rebounds and two steals in 63 minutes during two Canada West games played.
In the 59-56 win over Trinity Western on Saturday, November 12, the Winnipeg native registered a game-high 25 points and was a 8-of-16 (50%) from the field (plus 9/10 from foul line) and added eight rebounds and one steal in 36 minutes. In the first game on November 10, Manitoba lost 75-33 at Fraser Valley yet Ilelaboye almost accounted for half the points for the team when she poured in a game-high 16 points (5/6 free throw shooting) with one rebound and one steal in 27 minutes.
This is the second time that Ilelaboye has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports female athlete of the week in the 2001-12 season (October 10)
Manitoba (1-3) will travel and to play against the Brandon Bobcats (0-4) on November 18-19. Tip off for both games in Brandon will be at 6 p.m. CT.
The Bison men’s hockey team swept a home weekend series against the Lethbridge on November 11-12 at the Max Bell Arena (U of Manitoba campus). Rookie forward Brendan Rowinski made an impact during the back-to-back wins.
Rowinski registered four points (two goals, two assists) with a +2 plus/minus rating along with three shots, a game-winning goal and a second star selection.
The first year forward started the weekend with a multipoint game (one goal and one assist) and a +2 plus/minus rating in the 5-2 win on Friday, November 11. The next night, Rowinski notched the game-winning goal and added one assist in another 5-2 victory and was also named second star for his efforts.
#8 Manitoba (6-2-2) are on the road as they play the UBC Thunderbirds (4-4-2) on November 18-19. Puck drop both nights is at 9 p.m. CT.
