Women's hockey student-athlete, Maggie Litchfield-Medd and men's hockey student-athlete, Joe Caligiuri have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 12/12.

The Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team completed their 2011-12 season with a valiant effort against the No. 3 and conference leader Calgary Dinos at home during the Feb. 10-12 weekend at the Max Bell Arena (U of Manitoba campus).

In the two game series, second year forward Maggie Litchfield-Medd had two impressive games as she notched two highlight reel goals with five shots plus was named a first star in the final game of the year for the Bisons.

On Friday, Feb. 10, Litchfield-Medd had jaws drop at the Max Bell Arena. Down 2-1 in the second, she undressed two Dinos defencemen with a two spectacular toe-drags and then faked goaltender Jennifer Mallard to the ground, before roofing a backhand shot in a tough 3-2 (OT) loss. The following game, the Winnipeg native scored another memorable goal as she went end-to-end, after a Manitoba penalty, and ended with a breakaway goal where she stick handled past two defenders before a backhand goal between the goalies’ legs to tie up the game in the second before another close 3-2 loss. Litchfield-Medd was also named first star in Feb. 11 game.

Litchfield-Medd finished tied for ninth in Canada West scoring with 21 points (11 goals, nine assists) and +12 rating in all 24 conference games.

This was the third time that Litchfield-Medd has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports female athlete of the week in the 2011-12 season (November 6, January 1).

The No. 4 ranked Bison men’s hockey team claimed three of four points on the road against the Calgary Dinos to remain in first place in the ultra-competitive Canada West standings with one week reaming in the regular season.

Goaltender Joe Caligiuri was in goal for one of the two games and made it count as he registered his third shutout in a 1-0 (SO) victory on Saturday, February 11.

The second year netminder stymied the Dinos for the third consecutive time this season as he made 25 saves and, more telling, registered seven saves in the second overtime to preserve the road win.

Caligiuri is now fifth in Canada West goaltending stats with a 2.46 Goals Against Average, fourth in Save Pct. at .911, fourth in conference wins at ten and tied for first with three Canada West shutouts.

This is the second time that Caligiuri has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports male athlete of the week in the 2011-12 season (October 2).

Manitoba (18-5-3) completes their conference regular season at home versus the fifth place UBC Thunderbirds (12-11-3) on Feb. 17-18 at the Max Bell Arena (U of Manitoba campus). With a home sweep of UBC, the BIsons will clinch first place and a first round bye in the 2012 playoffs.
