Women's track & field student-athlete, Sade Ogungbemi and men's volleyball student-athlete, Dane Pischke have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 26/12.

The Bison women’s track and field competed at the 2012 Canada West Track and Field Championships at the University of Saskatchewan from February 24-25 and ended up fifth with 38 points – two points back of fourth place Victoria. It was the last chance for athletes to qualify for the 2012 CIS T&F National Championship held this year at the University of Manitoba from March 8-10.

Sade Ogungbemi (pronounced: sha-day o-goon-bemi) earned her CIS championship spot with a scintillating run in the women’s 60m race. She placed third but just missed a silver medal by 5/100th of a second as she blazed to a time of 7.71. The rookie runner ran her fastest time of the year and now placed her as ninth fastest in the CIS in the event so far this season.

In addition, Ogungbemi earned another medal as she ran the lead leg for the Bison women’s 4x200m relay team that placed third in a time of 1:44.16.

Manitoba track and field teams will compete at the Boeing Indoor Classic from March 2-3 at the Max Bell Fieldhouse before the last meet of the season when the Bisons host the 2012 CIS T&F National Championship at the University of Manitoba from March 8-10.

The No. 2 ranked Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball team finished second in the 2012 Canada West Final Four at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.

The #2 seed Bisons lost to #1 seed and host Trinity Western by a close 3-2 (23-25, 29-27, 25-23, 14-25, 9-15) score in the gold medal final match on Saturday, February 25. Manitoba defeated the #3 seed Alberta Golden Bears by a 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21) in the semi-final match at the Final Four on Friday, February 24.

Fourth year right side Dane Pischke had a fantastic weekend in both matches as he registered 34 kills with .291 overall hitting percentage along with 32 digs, nine total blocks, two assists and 38.5 points in nine sets during the Feb. 24-25 playoff weekend.
