|Ocon and Voth are Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week|

|Women's swimming student-athlete, Luella Ocon and men's volleyball student-athlete, Chris Voth have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 19/12.|
At the end of the 2012 Western Championship at the Pan Am Pool from February 16-19, a 13 year old Manitoba Bisons swim record was broken.
Rookie Luella Ocon swam her fastest time in the 100m breaststroke by finishing fifth and more importantly, established a new Bison record with a fast time of 1:11.68. Her Bison record-breaking time broke a 13 year old mark by over a half second set by Michelle Brunet in 1999 (1:12.28).
In addition, Ocon was second in the ‘B’ Finals and finished in tenth spot in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 33.74 and swam to a 14th spot in the 200m breaststroke (2:39.65).
The Winnipeg native has already qualified for the 2012 CIS Swimming Championships.
This is the second time that Ocon has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports female athlete of the week in the 2011-12 season (January 29).
For Bison swimming, there is four female swimmers (Ocon, Keri-Ann Bochen, Julie Therrien and Kendra Garagan) and one male (Riley Pickerl) to compete at the final varsity event at the 2012 CIS Swimming Championship from February 23-25 at the University of Montreal.
The #2 Bison men’s volleyball team clinched a berth into the 2012 CIS Men’s Volleyball National Championship with a 2-0 playoff series against the UBC Okanagan Heat at home in the best-of-three quarter final on February 16-17. This is the first time Manitoba has advanced to the CIS Nationals since the 2005-06 season.
Fourth year left side Chris Voth was a big factor in the post-season home sweep with two strong matches. He registered 22 kills with an overall .422 hitting percentage along with 13 digs, six total blocks, two service aces, one assist and 27.5 points.
In the 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-21) victory on Thursday, Feb. 16, the Winnipeg native had team-high 12 kills with .526 hitting percentage and five digs along with blocks, two service aces and 16.0 points in starting and playing all three sets. The next night, Voth added another team high with ten kills (.346 hitting percentage) and eight digs plus three blocks, one assist and 11.5 points in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) home win.
This is the second time that Voth has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports male athlete of the week in the 2011-12 season (November 20).
Manitoba (regular season: 18-2; playoffs: 2-0) plays in the 2012 Canada West Men’s Volleyball Final Four on February 24-25 at Trinity Western. The first Bison match is against Alberta on Friday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. CT.
