Litchfield-Medd and Ozsayiner are Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week

Women's hockey student-athlete, Maggie Litchfield-Medd and men's basketball student-athlete, Yigit Ozsayiner have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 1/12.

The Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team played a holiday non-conference tournament at McGill against three CIS Top 5 teams from December 28-30.

During the three games, Manitoba went 1-2 and second year forward Maggie Litchfield-Medd registered two goals and one assist and was named a first star in their victory.

Litchfield-Medd had a multi-point game as she pocketed three points (2g, 1a) versus No. 4 ranked St. Francois Xavier during a 4-2 victory on Friday, December 31. In the other two games, Manitoba battled hard as they flew in on the same day due to flight delays and then lost a tough 4-2 game to No. 2 ranked Laurier on Dec. 28 and also lost to host and defending CIS Champion McGill by a 3-0 score on Dec. 29.

Litchfield-Medd is tied for tenth in Canada West scoring with 11 points (eight goals, three assists) and +9 rating in 14 conference games so far this season.

This is the second time that Litchfield-Medd has been named Smitty’s Bison Sports female athlete of the week in the 2011-12 season (November 6).


Manitoba (7-5-2) host the Regina Cougars (4-9-1) on January 6-7 at Max Bell Arena (U of Manitoba campus). Puck drop both nights is 7 p.m. CT.


The Manitoba Bisons men’s basketball team played at the 45th annual Wesmen Classic during the holiday break and captured the consolation final and posting a 2-1 record during the three games on December 28-30.

First year forward Yigit Ozsayiner (YEET Oh-Sane-yer) came off the bench to contribute as he scored 41 points on 16-28 field goal shooting (7-11 in three-point shooting), nine rebounds, four assists, one block and steal in 53 minutes and earned a player of the game honour.

In the first game, Ozsayiner had a team-high 13 points on 4-6 shooting (3-4 from three-point line) with three rebounds and one rebound and steal in 22 minutes in a 80-72 loss to Valley City on Dec. 28. He added 12 points, four rebounds, one assist and block in 16 minutes during a 81-79 win over Keyano College on Dec. 29. In the consolation final, The Istanbul, Turkey native was named  player of the game after a game-high 16 points on 7-10 shooting (2-3 from three-point) plus four rebounds in only 15 minutes.

This was Ozsayiner first action with Manitoba as he became eligible to play during the holiday tournament.


Manitoba (5-4) starts the second half of the 2011-12 Canada West season on the West Coast as they play UBC Okanagan (1-6) on Friday, January 6 at 10 p.m. CT and then Thompson Rivers (4-4) on Saturday, January 7 at 9 p.m. CT.
