Souza and Munt are Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week

Bison Sports logoWomen's volleyball student-athlete, Christina Souza (U 1) and men's volleyball student-athlete, Ryan Munt (Asper School of Business) have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 27/11.

The #5 Bison women’s volleyball team split a home weekend series against the #2 ranked Alberta Pandas during the Nov. 25-26 weekend. Manitoba completes the first half of the 2011-12 Canada West conference season with a 7-3 record and handed Alberta their second loss of the season.

Rookie setter Christina Souza was a major part with two strong matches. She contributed 75 assists, 25 digs, 12 kills, five total blocks and two service aces.

In the 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-7, 25-16) victory on Friday, Nov. 25, the Brasilia, Brazil native had a game-high 35 assists, 11 digs, seven kills (.700 hitting percentage), two blocks and twoservice aces in starting and playing all four sets. She also served out tenconsecutive points in the third set. The next night, Souza added another 40assists, 14 digs, five kills and three blocks in a tough 3-2 (25-17, 25-19,23-25, 21-25, 10-15) loss. 

Manitoba (7-3) have the conference bye to end the first half of conference play and will now have the holiday break before resuming Canada West action in second week of January.

In a battle of unbeaten men’s volleyball teams, the now #2 Manitoba Bisons earned a home split against then now #3 Alberta Golden Bears during the Nov. 25-26weekend. Manitoba completes the first half of the 2011-12 Canada West conference season with a 9-1 record and handed Alberta their first loss of the season.

In addition, the last time the Bisons beat the Golden Bears was on November 28, 2003 by 3-1 at home. The win snapped a 15 Canada West regular season game consecutive losing streak for the Bison men’s volleyball team against Alberta.

Fifth year left side Ryan Munt contributed with two strong matches. He registered 22 kills, 12 digs, four assists, four total blocks and 25.5 points.

In the 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20) victory on Friday, Nov. 25, the East St. Paul, MB native had 12 kills, eight blocks, two blocks, one assist and service ace plus 14.5 points in starting and playing all four sets. The next night, Munt registered ten kills, four digs, three assists, two blocks and 11.0 points in a 3-2 (25-27, 28-26, 14-25, 25-16, 11-15) loss.

Manitoba (9-1) have the conference bye to end the first half of conference play and will now have the holiday break before resuming Canada West action in second week of January.
