Phalen and Pischke are Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week

Women's track & field student-athlete, Jacky Phalen and men's volleyball student-athlete, Dane Pischke have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 4/12.

The Bison women’s track and field team had final preparations for hosting the 2012 CIS T&F National Championship from March 8-10 when they competed at the 2012 Boeing Indoor Classic.

The 2012 Boeing Indoor Classic ran from March 2-3 and second year Jacky Phalen had a fast time in the 800m race as she won by beating seven other competitors in a time of 2:14.90.

Phalen has already qualified for this year’s CIS Championship as part of the 4x800m relay team (ranked ninth in CIS) and an alternate for 4x400m relay team (ranked sixth in CIS).

Manitoba Bisons track and field teams host the 2012 CIS T&F National Championship at the University of Manitoba from March 8-10 at the Max Bell Fieldhouse (U of Manitoba campus).

The Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball team finished with a bronze medal at the 2012 CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship held at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON from March 2-4.

The #2 seed Bisons won defeated the #7 seed Western Mustangs by a 3-2 score (25-22, 25-27, 25-17, 22-25, 19-17) in their quarterfinal match on Friday, March then lost to the #3 seed Laval Rouge et Or by a 3-1 score (25-15, 28-30, 22-25, 17-25) in their semi-final match on Saturday, March 3 and finished 2-1 in the championship when the Bisons won 3-1 (25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18) to host #5 seed Queen’s Gaels in the bronze medal match on Sunday, March 4.

Fourth year right side Dane Pischke completed his award-winner season as being selected as one of seven members to the CIS MVB Championship All-Star Team plus was named Manitoba’s Player of the Game twice (vs. Western and Queen’s). Overall, he had 53 kills in three matches.

In the quarterfinal match, Pischke had team-high 17 kills, ten digs, six total blocks and four service aces vs. Western. In the semi-final match, the Winnipeg native had another team-high 14 kills, 13 digs and one service ace vs. Laval. In the bronze medal match, the fourth year right side finished with a game-high 22 kills, eight digs, two total blocks and one service ace vs. Queen’s.

Pischke also won Smitty’s Bison Sports weekly honours earlier this season (Oct. 30/11, Nov. 6/11, Feb. 26/11).

With the bronze medal match win, Manitoba earns a bronze medal for the first time since their last CIS Championship appearance in 2006.
