Erica Swendrowski’s marbles aren’t from your typical bag of aggies and immies. They’re big, colourful and literally full of life.
The University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture graduate unveiled her art project, a series of giant marbles, on Portage Avenue on July 31.
The project was a collaboration between a group of merchants that sponsors efforts to promote the downtown as a residential, shopping and entertainment hub. The Winnipeg Arts Council was also involved in getting the art started.
Swendrowski decided to create them marbles after walking down Portage Avenue while visualizing the life-size glass artwork in the median lanes.
The giant spheres can be seen between Vaughan and Garry Street.
"Some have plants growing out of them," explained Swendrowski. "Others, which are just getting final touches added to them, will light up at night."
A total of 20 marbles will be put in place over the next several weeks.
