Students shine the way to a cure

University of Manitoba students have already surpassed a Manitoba record and on Thursday they will go further when they shine shoes on downtown streets in an effort to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis research and patient care.

The University of Manitoba Shinerama Committee led by Amanda Stevens and Zorica Tomovska, students from the I.H Asper School of Business, has so far raised a Manitoba record of $17,300 for Shinerama. Their goal is to raise $25,000. And you can help.

Shinerama is Canada's largest university-based fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research and care and this year marks its 45th anniversary. This will be the 25th year the University of Manitoba participates in Shinerama.

Shine Day is Thursday, September 17. Stevens and Tomovska hope to have over 450 students all over campus and various sites in downtown Winnipeg, shining things to raise money and awareness.

Before Shinerama began in 1964, most CF patients did not live long enough even to attend kindergarten. Today, patients live beyond 40 thanks to the $19 million Shinerama has raised for CF research and treatment.

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal, inherited disease of young Canadians. It causes progressive damage to the lungs and digestive systems. Despite aggressive treatment, lung infection and its complications kill virtually every person with CF.
