University of Manitoba student Luke Nickel was honored with a SOCAN Young Composer Award.

Nickel, a 4th year Music student doing a double major in both composition and flute, was awarded second place in the SOCAN Young Composer Awards in the Godfry Ridout Category (vocal composition).

The award was presented for Luke's opera "Jack and His Jillions". This particular opera piece was commissioned for the Summer 2008 Contemporary Opera Lab at the University of Manitoba.

The opera premiered in early July 2008 at Prairie Theatre Exchange.

The annual SOCAN Foundation Awards recognize Canadian composers under 30 years of age for specific musical works in six categories of concert music. Founded in 1992, the SOCAN Foundation is dedicated to fostering musical creativity and promoting a better understanding of the role of music creators in today's society.
