U of M matches record for Academic All-Canadians
Posted Friday, August 3, 2007†3:36 PM

At the completion of the 2006-07 season, Bison Sports matched last season's all-time high in CIS Academic All-Canadians with 68 student-athletes qualifying by maintaining a 3.5 grade point average or better based on a 4.5 scale in their field of study at the University of Manitoba.

Some highlights included University of Manitoba Bisons track and field student-athlete Christopher Hrynkow, who completed his Bison career by earning this prestigious honour during all five consecutive eligible years, and womenís track and field athlete Janelle Vincent who graduated as a four-time Academic All-Canadian.

Bison student-athletes earning this honour during their first four Bison years were womenís basketball Melanie Schlichter, womenís hockey Dana Hoogsteen, womenís track and field Kja Isaacson and menís track and field Jesse Howatt. Of the 68 Bisons earning the CIS recognition, six are now three-time CIS Academic All-Canadians and 17 have reached this honour for the second time.

The overall total of 68 Bison Sports student-athletes earning CIS Academic All-Canadian represents over 22 per cent of the total number of Bison Sports student-athletes (304). The overall percentage of Bison Sport student-athletes named as Academic All-Canadians has been at 20 per cent or higher over the last four years.

Bison Sports Athletic Director Coleen Dufresne stated, ďThese young men and women are such great role models for the youth of our city. Excelling both academically and athletically, these student athletes demonstrate the Bison philosophy. I'm very proud of their accomplishments and congratulate all of them.Ē
