University of Manitoba President and Vice-Chancellor David Barnard today congratulated Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo on being elected to his second term.

"National Chief Atleo’s vision for change sees education as being a positive transformational force for the people he represents and we share that vision," said Barnard. "I look forward to building an even more productive working relationship with the Assembly of First Nations under his strong leadership."

The University of Manitoba is committed to building a society where First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples, cultures and traditions are reflected in and respected in schools, workplaces and public institutions.

Barnard also congratulated University of Manitoba alumni and candidates Joan Jack [BEd/86] and Diane Kelly [BA/92, LLB/95] for running strong campaigns in addition to thanking Bill Erasmus, Ellen Gabriel, Terrance Nelson, Pam Palmater and George Stanley for their campaigns.

"Individuals who are willing to make personal and family sacrifices to advance the cause of their peoples, cultures and communities deserve our respect," said Barnard. "Anyone who participates in the political process is contributing to a healthy democracy in our country."
