IST to offer enhanced wireless access through "Wireless N"
Posted Wednesday, July 11, 2012 4:00 PM

With an ever-evolving need for connectivity from faculty, staff, and students, IST has been diligently deploying new wireless across campus.

Wireless N is the newest and most current wireless technology available today. It provides a wider range and capacity to support the many users who now connect to the University’s Network.
As of July 3rd the Biological Science Building was the first building to go live offering Wireless N to its users.

IST has planned for an additional 8 buildings to offer Wireless N before September; University Center, Art Lab, Machray Hall, Armes, Sinnott, St Andrew’s College, Allen, and Administration
In addition to those 9 buildings, two more buildings will be offering wireless before the start of the fall term. Both the Education and Buller  buildings will be offering Wireless G service for the first time.

Building construction that is necessary to complete these enhancements is expected to wrap up by July 15th. Each building then undergoes upgrades to IST networking technology, and finally the Wireless N service is tested and deployed. Currently University Center is undergoing Wireless N testing, with that testing expected to wrap in the next couple of weeks.

Because of this project, University Center tenants have already noticed the increased availability of Wireless on the first and third floors, including in UMSU’s The Hub. The access provided via the Wireless N Project is to the University’s existing three wireless networks: UofM, UofM-WPA, and Eduroam.

These upgrades are part of a $1.45 million enhancement to network services offered at the University of Manitoba. The Duff Roblin building is expected to be upgraded to Wireless N during the fall term, it’s completion bringing the project to a successful close.
