The University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine is hosting its 25th annual Canadian Student Health Research Forum and the Canadian National Medical Student Research Symposium June 11-14, 2012 at the University of Manitoba’s Bannatyne Campus.
 
More than 250 of Canada’s top health research students and postdoctoral fellows will present and showcase their research, network with their colleagues, faculty members and distinguished speakers and be recognized for excellence in scientific discovery.
 
This year’s symposium themes, Inflammation and Health, are important areas of research extending our understanding of the underlying cellular processes and in combating a broad spectrum of debilitating diseases.
 
“Our renowned symposium speakers have made important contributions in their research fields and welcome the opportunity to share their scientific journey with students and other researchers,” said Dr. Brian Postl, Dean of Medicine.
 
The Canadian Student Health Research Forum also features the CIHR Health Research Poster Presentations, Manitoba Health Research Poster Competition, awards, tours and social events as well as the one-day symposium on cross-disciplinary scientific themes by some of the world's leading scientists.
 
“Students in the health sciences conduct research in a wide variety of labs clinical settings," said Dr. Ed Kroeger, Assistant Dean, Graduate Studies, Faculty of Medicine. "It is extremely beneficial for them to network with fellow graduate and doctoral students from across Canada and engage with renowned scientific researchers.”
 
Dr. Dong Liu, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut will give the E.L. Drewry Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, June 12 at 12:00 p.m. in Theatre B, Basic Medical Sciences Building on "Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases differentially regulate Primary and Secondary anti-Leishmania Immunity"
 
The Canadian National Medical Student Research Symposium’s professional development workshop on “Developing and maintaining a successful research career: What you need to know" will take place Wednesday, June 13 at 12:40 p.m. in the Frederic Gaspard Theatre.  It will feature a panel discussion with Drs. Kent HayGlass, Dr. Patrick Choy, Julie Ho from the University of Manitoba, and McGill’s Joaquim Madrenas.
 
The Symposium on Inflammation and Health will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2012 in Frederic Gaspard Theatre featuring the following speakers:

In addition, a Poster Session and Presentation of Recognition Awards for the Canadian Student Health Research Forum will be held Thursday, June 14 at 12:30 p.m. in Brodie Atrium.
