This update is intended to provide information to stakeholders as to the status of ANGEL and the migration to D2L.

Desire2Learn Update – July 2012

The D2L implementation team will provide periodic updates to inform people of the progress being made with implementing D2L. It is important to keep in mind that the migration to the D2L learning management system is being undertaken primarily to enhance the learning experiences of students and provide a flexible teaching tool for instructors.

FAQ’s

What is the status of the Desire2Learn (D2L) implementation?

The D2L implementation team has been working to configure the system and create resources to prepare the University community for the migration to D2L. We are currently in the midst of a small pilot that includes 15 courses. We are gearing up to meet instructor training needs in the fall.

What is happening to ANGEL?

We have decided to extend the ANGEL license for fall to ease the transition from ANGEL to Desire2Learn.

How do instructors begin working in D2L?

We have approached a few faculties to assist them in moving to Desire2Learn for the fall. In addition, any instructors who want to move their courses can do so at any time by following the steps outlined below:

1.       All fall courses in Aurora have been created in D2L. Going forward we will continue to create all courses from Aurora automatically, removing the need for an instructor to request courses for a new term.

2.       All ANGEL fall courses have been migrated to D2L. Over the next 4-6 weeks we will have the winter course migration complete.

3.       All userids from ANGEL have been created in D2L. This means that most instructors should be able to login to D2L with their UMnetIDs. All UofM employees needing access to D2L will require their UMnetIDs and will no longer be using ids in the form of surname_initial. If an instructor is unable to login to D2L, please contact us (see below). Beginning later this summer Iridium will manage access to D2L.

4.       When instructors are ready to begin working in D2L we need an email requesting their access to the ANGEL-migrated courses, and to their fall courses (d2l@umanitoba.ca).

5.       It is recommended that all instructors attend a D2L Introductory Workshop: www.umanitoba.ca/ist/training/reg. New sessions will be added throughout the summer and fall to ensure that workshops are available.

6.       Some self-learning tools are available in the form of a D2L course, and video tutorials that can be requested through our department (d2l@umanitoba.ca).

How are copyright regulations affecting the migration to D2L and how are copyright regulations being implemented?

1.       Once an instructor has access to their migrated ANGEL course materials they need to review those materials to ensure they comply with the new legislation. The Copyright Office explains the changes to legislation in the D2L Workshops. Information is also available at: http://umanitoba.ca/admin/vp_admin/ofp/copyright/resources.html or by contacting Juliette Nadeau, Juliette.Nadeau@ad.umanitoba.ca, 474 8644.

2.       During the training sessions, instructors will be shown a process where they can place copyrighted materials within certain repositories. All materials must be clearly identified (this will be explained in training sessions).

3.       Instructors should contact the Copyright Office once they’ve reviewed their ANGEL migrated course materials.  The Copyright Office will assist as needed.

4.       Instructors can then copy their revised course materials into their fall course offering(s).

5.       Instructors choosing to create new content, and not work from a course migrated from ANGEL just need to request access to their fall courses. They should still familiarize themselves with the process available to manage copyrighted materials in D2L to ensure they are incompliance with copyright regulations.
