About 40 students from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences are getting ready to take a turn pushing a custom-made, burgundy-colored steel bed frame down Highway #1 from Brandon to Winnipeg this weekend to raise money for CancerCare Manitoba.
The 24th annual Aggie Bedpush starts Saturday morning, October 1, from Humpty’s Restaurant in Brandon. Humpty’s is providing free breakfast to all Bedpush participants. There will be at least four vehicles, including a motorhome, traveling with the big bed to protect the runners and provide refreshments along the way. Murray Chevrolet and Midtown Ford in Winnipeg have each donated vehicles for the fundraiser.
The first stop will be in MacGregor on Saturday night at Wayne’s Family Restaurant for a BBQ sponsored by Manitoba Pork. Then Wayne’s cooks up a hearty breakfast at no charge Sunday morning for all the participants. On Sunday, the vans, trucks and bed will move west along the #1 highway to Headingley and into Winnipeg to finish up at the steps of the University of Manitoba’s Administration Building Monday, October 3 at noon.
Fourth-year aggies James Stoesz and Mike Klassen are co-chairing the annual charity fundraiser.
"The students take turns pushing the bed and it moves pretty fast," Mike says. "The bed doesn’t stop moving until we hit our destination for the day. But if anybody wants to give us a donation along the way, we’ll gladly pull over on the shoulder to accept it!"
Cash or cheques may be sent to the Dean’s Office, Agriculture Building, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg R3T 2N2. Cheques should be made out to “Aggie Bedpush”. Receipts will be given for donations of $10.00 or more.
