Klassen, van Lankvelt, and Toews named to 2007 Summer Universiade Canadian Team

Josh KlassenCanadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced the athletes that will represent Canada in menís volleyball at the 2007 Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand (August 8-18). Manitoba Bisons Josh Klassen, Toon van Lankvelt and Nathan Toews were selected to the 12 member squad.

All three players were already named to Team Canada Senior Menís Volleyball team for the 2007 International Volleyball season and hold impressive resumes.

In 2006-07 season, Klassen earned his fourth post-season conference honour in his career as he was selected as a 2006-07 Second Team All-Star. Toon van Lankvelt earned his third post-season Canada West honour in his career as he was selected as a 2006-07 Second Team All-Star.

Toon van LankveltIn his five year CIS career, Klassen was named to Canada West All-Rookie Team in 2001-02 and Canada West Second Team All-Star in 2003-04, 2005-06. Toon van Lankvelt was also selected as the Canada West Rookie of the Year in 2002-03 and Canada West First Team All-Star in 2004-05.

In conference regular season play in 2006-07 season, Klassen finished third in conference service aces at 0.43 per game. Toon van Lankvelt was eighth with 3.26 conference kills per game. In conference points, van Lankvelt was fifth with 4.0 points per game. In team stats, van Lankvelt led with 222 conference kills and Klassen was second with 177. Klassen had 102 conference digs while van Lankvelt was second with 76.

Nathan ToewsNathan Toews finished his fourth season with the Bisons in 2006-07 season. Last season, Toews was fourth with 1.22 conference blocks per game and tenth at 0.25 service aces per game in Canada West. In team stats, Toews was fifth with 86 conference kills, second with service ace with 16 and led the team with 78 conference blocks in the regular season. In addition, he was selected to York University Excalibur Volleyball Classic Tournament All-Star team and named Brandon University Tournament - Best Blocker in 2006-07.

Toews also finished fourth in blocks per game in Canada West with 1.09 in 2005-06 and finished fourth in blocks per game in Canada West with 1.00 in 2004-05.
