The Bison men’s volleyball – Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Scholarship fund is used to support a scholarship for a returning Bison volleyball player who best exemplifies Dale’s characteristics of leadership in volleyball and scholastic accomplishment. The available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship, with a minimum value of $1,500, to an undergraduate student-athlete who is in his in the third, fourth, or fifth year with the Bison men’s volleyball program. Dr. Dale Iwanoczko was a member of the Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball program from 1986 until 1991. During that time, Iwanoczko was CIAU Rookie of the Year in 1986-1987 plus CIAU All-Canadian all five years of eligibility and was part of the Bisons’ CIAU Championship year (1989-1990) while being named 1990-91 CIAU Player of the Year. Iwanoczko accomplished this while maintaining high academic standing in the Faculty of Science (Dean Honor Role) and later in the Faculty of Medicine. Volleyball was a very important part of Dale's life and he made many lifelong friendships with both players and coaches. He continued to be an active member of the volleyball community as vice-president of the Manitoba Volleyball Association. Dr. Dale Iwanoczko passed away on September 15, 1998, after a year long battle with cancer. Pischke, 21, continues to impress in his fourth season with the Bisons. He is currently ranked seventh in Canada West hitting percentage at .352, fourth in conference kills with 3.90 per game (31 games/121 kills) and third in conference points at 4.50 points (31 games/139.5 points) in 2011-12 season. The Asper School of Business student-athlete also was a 2010-11 CIS Academic All-Canadian award winner and has earned that academic honour during his first three seasons. This is the third year of this Memorial Scholarship, which was established as an endowment fund at the University of Manitoba in memory of Dr. Dale Iwanoczko. The Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative have made a contribution to the fund. The inaugural winner for the 2009-10 season was Bison Ryan Munt and last season was Pischke.
At the Friday, November 25 match of the #3 ranked Bisons versus the #2 ranked Alberta Golden Bears, the annual Bison men’s volleyball – Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Scholarship will be presented prior to the start of the men’s volleyball game at approximately 8 p.m. CT.
