Manitoba Bisons will host 2012 CIS Track and Field Championship
Posted Thursday, June 18, 2009 2:48 PM
On Thursday, June 18/09, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) announced the successful bids to host 13 national championships in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Manitoba Bisons were one of the successful bids as they have been selected to be the host of the 2012 CIS Track and Field Championship.
Manitoba will now prepare to host this prestigious event for the sixth time as the Bisons also hosted a CIS Track and Field Championship in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995 and recently in 2005. The event will be run in March 2012 at the Max Bell Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Manitoba.

Bison Sports Athletic Director Coleen Dufresne enthused, “We are excited and proud to have the opportunity to host the 2012 CIS Track & Field National Championship in the Max Bell Fieldhouse - the fastest indoor track in the country. This will be a great opportunity to showcase the highest level of talent across the country and, in particular, our Bison Track & Field athletes. Over 350 student athletes, families and friends will come to our campus.  This is good for Bison Sports, the University of Manitoba and the city of Winnipeg!”
Over the last 15 years, Manitoba (2005, 1995) and Saskatchewan (2006) are the only two universities from Western Canada who have hosted the CIS T&F National Championship. At the 2005 CIS T&F Championship held at the University of Manitoba, the Bisons women’s team finished with a silver medal (the highest finish in over a decade) and the men’s side was seventh. The other four times that Manitoba hosted this CIS championship event, the Bison men’s track and field team were champions.
“The University of Manitoba Track & Field program is very excited to be hosting the 2012 CIS Track & Field Championships,” stated Bison track and field head coach Claude Berube. “As was the case in 2004 and 2005, we will be hosting the Canada West Championships in 2011 leading up to the 2012 Nationals. This is a great opportunity for our athletes to compete at home in front of friends and families. It is also a fantastic chance for the University of Manitoba community, as well as the local Track & Field community, to see the best Canadian university programs in action. This will help to focus our athletes to continue striving for excellence.”
Bison track and field note: Manitoba will also be host of the 2011 Canada West Track and Field Championship after hosting in 2007, 2004 and 2000 in this decade.
