Amy Coates (Science, Women's Hockey) and Steve Goertzen (U1, Men's Vollyeball) have been named the Smitty's Bison Sports Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 25/09.
Amy Coates averaged over two points a game in a road sweep by the No. 4 ranked Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team over the Calgary Dinos on Oct. 23-25 weekend. She was described by head coach Jon Rempel as “the best player on the ice for us over the two games.”
The fourth year forward had five points (one goal and four assists) with a +2 plus/minus rating and two shots in two regular season conference games.
On Friday, October 23, Coates notched two assists and a +2 rating during a 5-1 win for the Bisons first conference win of the season. The next night, the team captain fired home a power play goal and had two assists (for her second consecutive multi-point game) during a 4-1 win at Calgary.
With the five points, Coates is a tie for seventh in Canada West scoring and sixth highest in the conference with four assists.
The Bisons return home with a 2-2-0 record to face the UBC Thunderbirds (1-3-0) for their home opener on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31. Puck drop is 7 p.m. CT both nights at the Max Bell Arena (U of M campus).
Goertzen was dominant in the middle position for the Manitoba Bisons men’s volleyball team as he led the #5 ranked Bisons to a sweep of Regina on the road during the Oct. 23-25 weekend. Goertzen had 20 kills on 33 attempts for a .515 hitting efficiency plus 11 overall blocks, six digs and one service ace.
The No. 5 ranked Bisons defeated Regina by 3-0 and 3-1 margins on the road and Goertzen had 10 kills and a hitting efficiency of .562 with seven overall blocks and two digs in the 3-0 sweep on Friday, October 23. The next night, the second year middle player added another ten kills with four blocks and four digs with one service error in the 3-1 win on Saturday, October 24.
With the road sweep, Goertzen helped the Bisons to a 2-0 record and they sit atop the Canada West standings with four points after the first week of conference play.
Manitoba (2-0) will host the Brandon Bobcats on October 30-31 in its home opener at the Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of M campus).
