The 2011-12 CIS women’s volleyball All-Canadian teams and season honours were announced on Wednesday, February 29 2012. The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s volleyball program had one player named to All-Rookie Team.
Bison Christina Souza was selected to the 2011-12 CIS All-Rookie Team at the setter position.
Souza, 18, had an impactful rookie campaign as setter with Manitoba in 2011-12.
The Brasilia, Brazil native started all of the 18 conference regular season games and played in 74 sets out of 74 sets plus both the two playoff matches and all eight playoff sets during the 2011-12 season. On a very young team, she was the ‘quarterback’ at her position and was fifth in Canada West assists with 8.99 per game (74 games/ 665 assists) and fourth overall in CIS with 665 assists.
In addition, she ranked 17th in Canada West digs at 2.55 per game (74 gp/189 digs). The 5’8”, first year player also had 73 kills (fifth best on team), 36 total blocks (fifth on the team) and 18 service aces (fourth on the team) in conference regular season play.
Bison women’s volleyball head coach Ken Bentley stated, “Christina was a strong and consistent player throughout her first season. She was an integral part of our success despite our young team as she led the team from one of the more specialized position.”
