As the Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team prepares for their 2009-10 season home opener at the Max Bell Arena, this home opener will have a historic significance as it is the first time in the program’s 13 year history to raise a championship banner to the rafters of the Max Bell Arena.

On Friday, October 30 and prior to the start of the UBC Thunderbirds game at 7 p.m., Bison alumnus (Leanne Kisil, Katherine O’Rourke, Sarah Stebeleski, Amanda Schnell and Brenna Leary) from the 2008-09 Canada West Championship season will unveil the conference banner for the first time in front of their supporters of the program.

“It will a special night to reflect back on our accomplishment as the banner represents all our hard work last season to accomplished a desired goal,” said Rempel, “I am happy that the five seniors who helped win the Canada West Championship are here to assist in raising the first banner for the program.”

The Bisons won their first ever Canada West Championship in the program’s history after winning 3-2 in triple overtime against the Alberta Pandas in the third and final game of the conference championship on March 15/09. With the conference series playoff win, Manitoba advanced to the six team 2009 CIS Championship held at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia from March 19-22/09.

The Bison women’s hockey program is now in its 13th year banner and seeks to defend the Canada West crown it captured last season. The team is currently ranked No. 4 in the latest CIS Top 10 and hold a 2-2-0 record after back-to-back road wins at Calgary on the Oct. 23-25 weekend.

The Bisons face the UBC Thunderbirds (1-3-0) for their home opener on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31. Puck drop is 7 p.m. CT both nights at the Max Bell Arena (U of M campus) with the special Championship banner ceremony prior to Friday’s game.

Bison women’s hockey notes: During the weekend series versus UBC, the team is accepting any cash donations at the door in support of Winnipeg Harvest as the squad will be volunteering there on Monday, November 2.
