A thread is the group of messages that have been added beneath the top message (including the top message). To start a new thread, make sure you are already in the Forums tool for the appropriate section, then click the "Start New Thread" link in the Utility Bar. When you are starting a thread, you are simply adding a new message that is not a response to any existing messages.

If you are already logged in, you will not be required to enter your first name, last name, or email address because this information is already part of your account information. If you are not logged in and the section allows anonymous messages, you will be required to enter your first name, last name, and email address. Figure 1 shows a screenshot of the form for starting a new thread for users who are already logged in. Figure 2 shows a screenshot of the form for starting a new thread for users who are not logged in. Note: If you already have an account, it is highly recommended that you log in before starting new threads or replying to existing messages within a thread, even if anonymous messages are allowed.

If you are logged in, you will notice that there is an additional option below the "Body" field. If you leave the "Monitor this thread" checkbox checked, an email will be sent to you whenever a new message is added to this thread. This way, you don't have to continuously come back to the Forums tool to see if there has been a response; you can simply check your email.

Note: Some forums are moderated. This means that after a message is added, it will not be visible until the Section Owner or one of the section's Tool Managers has read the message and made it visible within the forum. If you are starting a new thread or replying to an existing message and the forum is moderated, a notice will be displayed at the bottom of the form.
